HIGH DESERT HIGH by Steven Schindler

Undercover cop Paul Santo chased drug dealers and junkies through the worst parts of New York City during the worst of times. He did his job well and was decorated for it. But times have changed and so has Santo. After decades on the job he was fed up with the pressures from bosses and the street. He snapped one boozy night, retired the next day, and after a family tragedy, drove cross-country with his estranged daughter to begin a new life in the mysterious California high desert. Just as the Joshua trees reach up to the heavens, Paul’s journey transcends earthly ambitions when strange sightings could mean a path to enlightenment… or madness.

MY THOUGHTS
(from book)  Looking to the open desert sky is the first step to opening one's mind.
Have you ever felt you just couldn't take what you were doing any more? Have you ever felt like you were going to snap?   Well that's what Paul Santo did! He snapped! enough was enough.  He had spent years as an undercover cop.  He did the worst of the worst.  Dealt with drug dealers, junkies, New York City's dark alley's, the most awful places you could imagine.   After years, Santa realizes he's changed, time's changed. So on a night of too much drinking, he woke up the next day and QUIT! Quit it all and left with  his estranged daughter.   There had been too many dark dangerous nights on the streets, too much pressure and then a family tragedy.  So off to a new life in the desert of California.  The savvy Santo has gotten from years on the streets and his inward soul may bring Santo to a new place in his life.  BUT - will that place be good or bad.  This book will make you think long and hard about decisions you make and where they may lead you.  You can take parts of Santo's life and compare them to you.  Turning the pages, you try to figure out what will happen and it puts you on the edge. You might find that what happens will totally surprise you.  You have no clue as to the direction this book will take.  This is Santo's chance to free himself.  But can he take that first step?
Don't let this one pass you by.  You may learn something about yourself after reading it.

I received an ARC from the author and voluntarily decided to review it.

I would give this book 5 STARS.
